2026 NSW Optimist Interclub Series at Woollahra Sailing Club - Round 1

by NSWIODA 4 May 02:00 PDT 3 May 2026

The 2026 NSW Optimist Interclub Series got under way in style on Sunday, with Round 1 hosted by Woollahra Sailing Club delivering a fantastic day of junior racing on Sydney Harbour.

More than 80 young sailors from clubs across New South Wales took to the water in a vibrant display of skill, enthusiasm, and sportsmanship. The strong turnout highlights the continued growth of the Optimist class and the popularity of the Interclub series as a key development pathway for junior sailors.

Competitors were greeted with classic autumn harbour conditions, featuring a 12-17 knot northerly breeze, providing excellent racing across the day. The steady wind range allowed race officials to complete a full schedule of short-course races, giving sailors the opportunity to showcase strong boat handling, tactical awareness, and racecraft.

"The conditions were just about perfect for junior racing," said a regatta spokesperson. "It was fantastic to see such a large and enthusiastic fleet enjoying competitive racing in a safe and supportive environment."

Racing commenced late in the morning following a competitor briefing, with efficient race management ensuring a smooth program throughout the day. Onshore, families and supporters contributed to a lively and welcoming atmosphere, reinforcing the strong community spirit that defines the Interclub series.

The NSW Optimist Interclub Series continues to play a vital role in introducing young sailors to club competition, fostering confidence, resilience, and a lifelong love of the sport.

Round 2 of the series will be hosted by Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron on Sunday, 24 May 2026, where sailors will look to build on a successful opening event and continue their development throughout the season.

The organisers extend a sincere thank you to all volunteers, race officials, coaches, and support crews whose time and effort ensured the smooth and safe delivery of the event. Their contribution remains essential to the success of junior sailing in New South Wales.

The event is supported by generous sponsors including Ronstan, boatcrewgear.com, North Sails, White Bay Marine Park, Vaikobi, NB Sailsports, and Rooster Australia, who have contributed a range of gifts and prizes for competitors throughout the series.
