Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council Urgies Action on Black Sea Bass and Summer Flounder

The Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council is urging federal officials to act immediately on delayed rulemaking that threatens the 2026 recreational fishing season for summer flounder and black sea bass.

After more than eight months without action, NOAA Fisheries may default to restrictive coastwide measures, undermining collaboratively developed state-based regulations and a long-anticipated 20% increase in black sea bass harvest opportunities. The Council warns this could limit access for anglers, harm for-hire businesses, and create widespread confusion and noncompliance just weeks before seasons open. They are calling for expedited approval of the framework and 2026 measures to ensure a stable, predictable, and economically beneficial fishing season.
