It feels like the Christmas holidays have just finished and now here we are at Easter. WOW The year is flying.

I hope you all have an amazing Easter.

The good news is that Easter is always a great time of the year to go fishing!

Lake Mulwala

In my fishing report last week I mentioned how my dad and his friends had been fishing at Lake Mulwala. Dad had caught a 70cm Murray cod and a few others had been caught.

Well after I wrote that report the fishing just died. Fish became very few and far between. So I will have to downgrade my Lake Mulwala fishing report to say that it is a bit "hit and miss" at the moment.

In saying that, April can be an amazing time to fish Lake Mulwala so I am expecting that the fish will catch fire very soon.

Ovens River

The Ovens River has been quite hit and miss this week. Last week the North East Catchment Management Authority (NECMA) and the Wangaratta Council ran the River Guardians event with an associated carp fishing competition.

Only a small number of fish were caught, with the largest carp being caught by Charlie Richards of Wangaratta. It was a whopping 75cm long. Well done Charlie.

Goulburn River

The Goulburn River has seen some improvements in fishing this week. I have seen a few photos of Murray cod and Yellowbelly caught in the Shapparton area, along with a cracking report of nice Yellowbelly and Murray cod caught by Alex paydon on a bright green Old Mate lure.

Lower Murray River

The Lower Murray River has been fishing quite well. My friend Mark Taylor caught a 74cm Murray cod near Swan Hill during the week, along with a 44cm cod. He said he lost an even bigger fish. Mark hooked his fish using cheese as bait.

Broken Creek

Broken Creek has been fishing well for carp. I spoke to a few people at the River Guardians event in Wangaratta last Friday night that fish Broken Creek regularly and they told me that they have been catching quite a lot of carp, particularly between Numurkah and Nathalia.

They told me that there have been a few Yellowbelly caught as well, but not very many. Hopefully continued fish stocking by VFA can improve that over the next couple of years.

Irrigation Channels

The irrigation channels in Northern Victoria have been fishing quite slowly lately. I was talking to a family in Shepparton last week that said that they have caught a few carp and Yellowbelly in a channel at Kyabram.

After I shared my fishless story in last week's report, I was told by someone that fishes the Waranga Western Channel that this irrigation season that channel has been fishing the worst that he has seen it fishing for redfin, and even carp have been harder than usual to find.

In saying all of that, Alex Paydon caught a lovely Murray cod in an irrigation channel near Shepparton on a Predator Lure this week, so they are definitely still in there.

Lake Buffalo

I spent an afternoon fishing at Lake Buffalo early this week. I was hoping to catch a feed of redfin but took my heavy Murray cod rod as well in case I decided to target cod later in the day.

The redfin fishing was quite slow. For the almost 4 hours that I targeted them I managed to catch 8 or 9. Of those fish only 1 was a nice size, the rest were small.

I spoke to a few other anglers and it turns out that I caught more than they all did. Overall, the fishing was slow.

I caught my redfin on a variety of lures, there was no stand out lure. I trolled them on a small OneWell Lunch minnow, a 10 foot Old Mate, a Savage Gear minnow and a Strike Tiger curl tail grub soft plastic on a dropper above my 10 foot Old Mate lure.

At sunset I decided to target Murray cod. I caught 3 Murray cod. Two were approx. 50cm long and one approx. 30cm. One was caught on a 10 foot Old Mate while targeting redfin, the other 2 were caught on a OneWell Sumo in "Simpson" colour.
