Euromarina Optimist Torrevieja at Real Club Náutico de Torrevieja - Day 2

The second day of the Euromarina Optimist Torrevieja took place in light winds of between 5 and 7 knots at around 2 p.m., allowing the committee to close one race for all groups.
Mª Antonia Peñalver from Murcia leads the overall standings in the women's category, although her fifth place in the overall standings is particularly noteworthy
The Euromarina Optimist Torrevieja has reached its halfway point. Today it was time to talk about the groups defined for the two rounds of final series; however, only one race could be completed, thanks to the great effort of the race committee. The committee had brought forward the start with the intention, according to the weather reports, of beginning the races at around 10:00 am. However, this was not possible, as Aeolus decided to stay away from the children's party in Torrevieja's waters.
Race officer Luky Serrano assessed the possibility of completing at least two races from early on, as suggested by several weather reports. Therefore, on the opening day, after analysing the situation, he decided to bring the start forward by almost an hour on this second day. However, in the end, this was not possible.
Serrano said: 'We started earlier; at 10:00 a.m., the fleet was already ready in the race area to begin the races. In the morning, there was a report indicating that the wind would decrease around midday, at around 1:00 p.m. However, the forecasts were not accurate.'
He also wanted to highlight that "we made numerous attempts to start in very gusty and light wind conditions, of no more than 4.5 knots. At least four attempts were made by the yellow and blue groups, while the red and green groups were unable to even get started. All these attempts had to be cancelled before the first mark because the wind disappeared completely,' adding that 'finally, at around 2:30 p.m., we managed to launch the first race of the day, which ended up being the only race completed, although we tried to hold a second one. However, it was impossible, and we had to cancel the start after a minute, as the wind had died down again. By 4:30 p.m., there was not enough time to complete another race, thus ending the day with only one race completed."
With the only race completed today, added to yesterday's race, there is already a clear leader in the Optimist fleet in Torrevieja. Nicolás Bastard (RCMA-R. Sporting Club) from Vizcaya has taken the lead thanks to his second partial victory in the regatta: yesterday he won in the yellow group and today in the blue group.
Behind him is Alonso Blanco (CN El Balís) from Catalonia, who has accumulated a 3rd (red) and a 4th (yellow), totalling 7 points. The provisional bronze goes to Nicholas Koekkoek (GWV de Vrijbuiter) from the Netherlands, with 8 points after a 2nd in the green group and a 6th in the blue.
Murcia's María Antonia Peñalver (CN Mar Menor Los Alcázares) leads the women's classification and also occupies fifth place in the overall standings with 10 points.
The forecast for the third day is complicated due to excessive wind. For this reason, the race committee does not plan to start the first race before 12:00 noon, provided that weather conditions, and in particular wind intensity, permit.
Welcome Party, the big children's sailing party
The Welcome Party, promoted by the main sponsor, Euromarina, has become a true hallmark of the Euromarina Optimist Torrevieja.
Organised by the RCN Torrevieja, the party once again put the spotlight on the young sailors, who proudly paraded carrying the flags of their countries and autonomous communities. As an appetiser, attendees were treated to a couple of performances by a children's ballet troupe from Torrevieja.
After the presentation of all the protagonists, the fleet enjoyed a barbecue.
