Medway RC Laser Club Winter Series - Day 2

by Jamie Blair 15 Dec 2025 02:05 PST 14 December 2025

Keen starters

For the second round of the Winter Series 7 sailors and one try a boat took to the water to master the SSW 15 knot wind. The try a boat stayed well clear of the racing but watched most of the 16 races completed.

A course in front of the café building with a starboard bias line saw he fleet super keen to get away. With the wind at 12 - 15 knots there was a split fleet, some with B rigs but the majority on C rigs.

All the starts were close giving the RO some calling to do for OCS, even with her croaky voice. Tim Townsend (45) was quickly out the blocks with the win in race 1. Jon Moon (84) a positive 2nd using the clear air by tack off to the right and stay away from the bunch.

Tim repeated his winning streak in race 2 but was not have it all his way. His consistency with seconds and thirds put him to the top at the break after race 8.

Each race involved a triangle and sausage, lasting around 8 minutes. A rapid turn around gives all an opportunity to have another bash at getting the start right and a good result.

By race 4 the whole fleet was on C rigs.

In the first session we had three race winners with Mark Penny (03) taking 3 wins, Jamie Blair (51) and Jon Moon (84) one race each. At the break Tim had a four point lead over Jamie followed by Mark and Jon.

Tim fell foul of a number of OCS calls along with Roger Gibb (32) and Lucian Stone (75). So keen that in one race the RO called a general recall.

Tim's 4 point lead stayed intact through to race 11, Jamie and Jon swapping places with each race. Mark had taken time out to let his daughter Charlotte race.

Two new race winners in this session - Lucian along with Roger and Jon with a purple patch of three wins and jumping ahead of Jamie in the leaderboard.

By race 14 the wind had strengthened to gust up to 25 knots so there was a flurry of D rigs broken out. They were not so good in the lulls but did come into their own in race 16 rapidly catching the two C rigs.

Tim held on to the win in this race and the overall for the day by 7 points, Jon second and Jamie third.

We will be back next week 21st December.

Shifty beats for six skippers Six out to compete in round 7 with SSE 6 to 10 knots. This wind provided a great course in front of the car park and café. The rain didn't deter but with the changing clouds overhead the wind direction had us all guessing which side paid up the beats. Posted on 1 Feb
