The PredictWind A-Class Catamaran World Championships 2025 are set to make a splash in Auckland this weekend at the Milford Cruising Club, with more than 55 sailors from eight different countries competing.
These machines are truly something to behold - lightweight at 75kg + the sailor, ultra-high-performance catamarans that, in the Open (foiling) category, lift clear above the water on hydrofoils and fly. They are the super-sexy crowd pleasers, capable of speeds of 35 knots or more.
For non-sailing fans, imagine a finely tuned racing yacht with the speed of a powerboat, moving with effortless grace and precision.
The Classic category, by contrast, is a non-foiling version, and races at around 20 knots in tighter, tactical fleets often shining when conditions get tricky, being lower in drag in light winds and more controllable when the breeze picks up.
Kiwi sailor Dave Shaw, a former national A-Class champion, is a standout in the foiling division alongside local Derek Scott. In the Classic fleet, veteran designer Mike Drummond, known for his work in the America's Cup, will be aiming to use his local knowledge to full effect.
International stars include reigning double world open champion Jakub Surowiec (Poland) and former triple world classic champion Andrew Landenberger (Australia), bringing speed and experience to Auckland waters.
Dave Shaw says, "Racing these boats is like nothing else - when you're flying above the water at 35 knots, every second counts. Being on home waters gives me an edge, but with the world's best here, it's going to be a real test of skill and nerves."
The Milford Cruising Club has been transformed into a lively race hub, with plenty happening on and off the water. Spectators can view racing from Rahopara Point (Castor Bay), watch the boats launch and return at Milford beach and take in the race atmosphere and enjoy events at the club.
With sailors, volunteers, and locals all involved, it promises to be a week that celebrates world-class sailing and the camaraderie that makes the sport so compelling.
The 2014 A-Class catamaran Worlds were held off Takapuna Beach, adjacent to Milford Beach. The event featured several members of Emirates Team NZ, and was a vital part of their workup ahead of the 2017 America's Cup and two successive wins.
Racing begins with the Pre-Worlds this weekend, followed by the main event from November 11 to 16. As the world's best A-Class sailors prepare to launch into battle, all eyes will be on Auckland's winds, tides and talent to see who can master these flying machines and claim the world title.
