The eighteen teams at the J/105 North American Championship in Toronto had a full day on Lake Ontario, completing four more races. While the day's winners saw several new faces, the leaderboard stayed consistent, with now nine of 12 races in the books. Randy Hecht's Niuhi hasn't finished out of the top five, and totals just 19 points in the no-discard series. Fellow San Francisco team Bruce Stone's Arbitrade continued their strong week to maintain second place at 37 points. Locals Terry McLaughlin and Rod Wilmer's Mandate returned to the bronze position with 50 points.
Friday saw breeze of 6-9 knots and sunny skies at Royal Canadian Yacht Club. Frank McLaughlin's Starcross opened with a victory, trailed by Matt Arno's Blue Flash and Stone's Arbitrade. Race seven's top boat was McLaughlin/Wilmer's Mandate, Hecht's Niuhi and Frank McLaughlin's Starcross. With their fifth bullet of the regatta was Hecht's Niuhi in the next contest, ahead of two RCYC teams: John Trumpener's The Usual Suspects and Eric Cooper's Nagadragon. Closing out the day successfully were Trumpener's The Usual Suspects, McLaughlin/Wilmer's Mandate and Paul Schiavoni's Mr. Krabs.
The Championship, with title sponsor British Virgin Islands, concludes Saturday. Photos from Tim Wilkes are available here, and complete results may be found at J/105 North American Championship.
