Open Finn European Championship 2024 at Yacht Club de Cannes - Day 2

by Robert Deaves 22 Oct 2024 08:18 PDT 18-25 October 2024

All racing on the second day of Open Finn Europeans in Cannes was abandoned after the wind failed to show up. With three races sailed on the opening day, one more race is needed on Wednesday to enable the finals series to begin as scheduled on Thursday.

It was always going to be the toughest day of the week, with little wind forecast. The fleet was held onshore until early afternoon when a building easterly encouraged the race committee to send the fleet afloat, but it soon shifted to the south-west and the fleet moved from the eastern bay to the western bay as it strengthened to 5-6 knots and the skies cleared. However, it was short lasting and soon after 15.30 the fleet was sent back to the harbour.

Four races are needed before the finals series can begin, and three are now scheduled on Wednesday, which would bring the championship back on schedule. Italy's Alessandro Marega currently leads from France's Laurent Hay and Valerian Lebrun. 152 sailors from 22 nations are taking part in Cannes.

Racing concludes on Friday.
