Oldest videos of sailing in International OK dinghies

by Magnus Smith 1 Dec 2023 15:59 PST

Our video archive is fully searchable, and linked to all the clubs and classes in our database. It is updated weekly with the latest videos of sailing, but here we delve into the past, and round-up everything that shows sailing in International OK class dinghies.

The oldest we could find was 1965, which is eight years after the class was designed. The 1965 Tideway Race at Putney, London has OKs amongst the other classes more often invited.

The OK class makes an appearance at various moments in this footage from Lake Mcilwane in 1971 including a few close ups. Wooden masts are still prevalent.

A promotional video for CORK (Canadian Olympic Regatta at Kingston) 1972 has OK dinghy footage at 2m50s.

This video from 1976-77 is an hour long, but features OKs almost every minute. It shows club racing and an OK open meeting (30m35s to 34m20s) at Burnham Overy Staithe in North Norfolk (UK). There is a big capsize at 3m03s with what looks like the helm becoming airborne!

If you are in a rush, there are several sections you can skip:

  • swimming - 11m00s to 14m23s
  • National 12 open meeting - 21m27s ending 23m20s
  • prizegiving - 29m09s to 30m35s
  • vicar - 41m45s to 44m58s
  • rowing - 50m50s to the end

We haven't found any older videos that show these boats, but do get in touch if you know of any interesting footage. You can submit video links to us for immediate review.
