First-ever ARC+ opening ceremony

The Sunday flag parade has been an ARC tradition for more than 30 years, and this year ARC+ joins the fun with the rally's first ever official opening ceremony.
Under perfectly blue skies, over 300 sailors, children and supporters gathered behind the flags of 30 nations to parade around the marina in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Accompanied by two local bands blasting out traditional marches and samba rhythms, the procession was a colourful and joyous celebration of sailors coming together.
The parade was led by Banda Guiniguada, followed by World Cruising Club Directors, Paul and Suzana Tetlow, carrying the flags of Spain and Gran Canaria. Then came the flags and sailors of 30 nations, including Germany, Brazil, Australia, France, Denmark, Norway, Malta, USA and the UK. The official flags were supplemented by ensigns from the boats, adding to the colourful scene. Bright in their yellow uniform, Batucada Samba Isleña kept the rear of the procession dancing to the samba beats.
The parade was popular with local marina users too - waiters came out of one of the restaurants to bang saucepan lids together and diners in the Sailor's Bay bar applauded and cheered as the spectacle went by.
Iain from Sea Hayes, proudly waving the Scottish Saltire said, "It's like our own Olympic ceremony, fantastic." Chris Lotthé from Namaste (FRA) said, "Not only was that so much fun, it was also incredibly emotional." Putting his hand to his heart, he added, "It got me here."
The ARC+ opening ceremony marks one week before the 96 yachts depart Las Palmas bound for Marina Mindelo in Sao Vicente Cape Verde. After that, they will head to the spice island of Grenada, docking in Camper & Nicholsons Port Louis Marina in St George's.
