ILCA Open at Notts County Sailing Club

by David Eberlin & Sarah Mason 10 Jul 2023 05:25 PDT 9 July 2023

On Sunday 9th July twenty-nine ILCA dinghies turned up at NCSC for the Rooster sponsored Midlands GP Open event at Notts County Sailing Club.

Rebecca Ogden, the Race Officer, had an interesting job as the wind swung and shifted, but at least it was dry in the morning.

The first race got off to a clean start, and a good beat, but by the second lap it was a reach, then halfway up the beat it changed back to a beat to the windward mark. It proved tricky for the Race officer and competitors.

In the First race Craig Williamson (Staunton) arrived at the windward mark first soon however he was overtaken by his dad Paul Williamson leaving line honours to Paul closely followed by Gary Knott from Notts County, however George Faraday (Earlswood) in his ILCA 6 won race 1 on handicap.

Race 2 got away after a course change then a general recall and shifty winds with a shortened race Craig Williamson this time beating George on handicap and Gary Knott coming home third with Sammy Mason (Notts County) just missing out on beating dad Richard Mason.

After a quick lunch break race 3 got away in slightly more breeze with Craig Williamson leading from start to finish.

Race 4 was a Pursuit race in changeable winds with Craig managing to beat his dad Paul and George managing to hold on to 3rd place. Sammy Mason did not keep dad behind her but did beat Gary Knott to finish 5th in the Pursuit.

Congratulations to two Youth girls Sammy Mason and Kat Gunn both from Notts County who finished 7th and 8th overall.

The prize-giving with homemade cakes donated by competitors and families finished a great day's sailing.

Rooster prizes were awarded to the top 3. The Master Trophy went to Paul Williamson. Sammy Mason won 1st Lady and Youth. Kat Gunn won 2nd Lady and Youth. John Wells won 1st Legend and David Beard won the Notts County Tuesday Night sailor.
