Ovington 2021 - ILCA 1 - LEADERBOARD

Noble Marine & Ovington UKLA ILCA 4 Spring Qualifier 3 at the WPNSA

by Amelie Hacker & UKLA 29 Mar 2023 21:12 UTC 18-19 March 2023

The third of the spring Qualifiers was all set for 25th & 26th of March with 154 ILCAs descending on WPNSA for another weekend of fun and very competitive racing.

The event got off to a slow start as racing for the ILCA 4s was postponed until the afternoon due to the high wind strength. The excitement started when the ILCA 4s were allowed to launch and sail to the start line. However, as the first race started the wind dropped to about 12 knots with gusts of 15.

Leo Yates adapted to the unexpected change in the wind conditions quickly and went on to win the first race.

For race 2, the wind dropped even further to 5 knots with small patchy gusts. The fleet recognised that there was a wind bend round Portland Bill so the race was more about boat speed and watching out for the gusts. Tom Hakes had a comfortable lead throughout the race and won convincingly. The exceptional performances of the day were Robbie Hudson, Lewis Bacon, Grace Stephens and Erin Pank who all got one top six position.

On the second day everyone got up early with the clocks turning back only to find out that the wind swung right early and there was no wind. Once the wind filled in, the racing got under way for all three fleets.

In the first race, there was a light offshore breeze with large shifts which the sailors needed to account for to gain places on the upwind legs.

In the second race, the wind picked up and was much gustier resulting in more chop so sailors could gain places downwind by surfing the waves.

In the final race, the boats were pushing the line as stakes become higher which resulted in a black flag general recall sending a few sailors in early. Hugh Andrews won the final race pulling him up the leader board with Ciara Murphy finishing just behind.

Although not consistent there were more outstanding performances - Tatiana Hazelwood, Alvaro Alonso and Ben Anderson all took at least one top three. The overall positions were: Leo Yates first, Tom Hakes second, Archie Munro-Price third and Amelie Hacker fourth (1st Girl).

A big thank you goes towards the Race Committee for excellent race management, the event organisers for running the event so smoothly. A special thank you to Ovington Boats and Noble Marine for being primary sponsors this weekend and Rooster and Sailingfast for their support of the Qualifiers series.
