2022 SB20 Australian Championship in Hobart - Day 2

by Jane Austin 11 Dec 2022 03:11 PST 10-12 December 2022

Ares Racing Team has unassailable lead

The Ares Racing Team, skippered by Will Sargent and from the Derwent Sailing Squadron has an unassailable lead in the 2022 SB20 Australian Championship which is under way on the River Derwent in Hobart. In a remarkable sailing effort, Sargent, and his talented youth crew of Paige Caldecoat, Ed Reid and Eirini Marios, have won eight from nine races in a feat which the SB20 stalwarts think may be a first for any team in an SB20 national event.

The rest of the fleet have been left scratching their heads wondering what they have to do to take a race off the young champions. Obi Kenobi, skippered by Frazer Read who is mentoring the young SB20 sailing team, managed a win in the final race of the second day of sailing, after finding stronger breeze on the western side of the course.

Read, who is sailing with daughter Faye, Jorja Cooper and Archie Yarrow, all 16 years old, is impressed with his young team's persistence and patience on the water, with Faye "super excited" to win a race today. "It's been great sailing in the regatta, especially learning from Dad. His main advice has been to keep listening to him, otherwise he will keep saying the same thing, which is usually telling us to do what we need to do, but to do it quickly," said Read.

Ares Racing Team leads overall on eight points from Aeolus on 19 points and Export Roo on 30 points, while Blue Gull (Scott Glanville) leads on performance handicap on 36 points, from Ares Racing Team on 40 points and Mind Games (Phil Reid) on 43.5 points. Ares Racing Team is also leading the Youth Division, while Karabos (Nick Rogers) is leading the Masters' Division.

There is only one race left to sail in the regatta, but with the silverware in the bag for Ares Racing Team, the only fight left will be for second and third place, and the Masters' trophy.
