A strong high over the Tasman is directing northeasterly winds over coastal waters.
A trough that brought a southerly change to southern and central parts of the coast on Saturday, is extending northwards and becoming fresh to strong and gusty later Saturday evening and into Sunday morning as a low deepens offshore. The low is expected to move rapidly away from the coast by later Sunday, with conditions easing as a new high becomes dominant.
BOM is forecasting dangerous fishing and boating conditions for Sunday for the Macquarie, Hunter, Sydney and Illawarra coasts. Seas will be 3 to 4 metres, swell will be 1.5 to 2 metres. Swells will be both southerly and north-easterly.
On those coasts on those days, BOM says conditions are expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as crossing bars by boat and rock fishing.
