On the 27th December 2021, the Royal Lymington Yacht Club (RLymYC) hosted its annual Peter Andreae Trophy for under 21s sailing double-handed in Scows on the Lymington River.

This year's race saw sibling rivalry like never before, with Jonny Rogers and Ben McEwen racing against older brothers Dirk Rogers and William McEwen in the final!

Jonny Rogers (aged 10) wrote: "I was sailing with my friend, Ben McEwen, who is also 10 years old. Before the racing started, Ben and I thought we were disadvantaged because it was a very windy morning and we were by far the lightest team.

We were unsurprised when we came second to last in our first two races but after that our results kept on getting better. In the races that followed we had a 4th, then a 2nd and two 1sts, which meant we made it into the final!

The other finalists were our older brothers Dirk Rogers and William McEwen and the Hutchinson team with siblings Amelia and William.

In the final we were had a great start, the wind dropped a bit and we managed to lead the race, winning the cup and £25 - each!

Dirk and William came second and Amelia and Will were third.

Thank you to everyone who helped to organise the race and well done to everyone who took part."

The Peter Andreae Trophy is just one of many racing events for junior and youth sailors at the RLymYC. Its origins date back to 1965 when life member of the club, Herman Andreae, bequeathed sum of money to RLymYC in memory of his son, Peter, who was lost at sea in a yachting accident before the First World War. The dividends were to form an annual prize for a competition amongst members under 21 years of age. Nowadays the race takes place just after Christmas every year, with children racing together in heats to qualify for the final.

RLymYC's junior and youth sailors are out in all weathers having fun. RLymYC provides coaching, racing and adventures for junior and youth sailors throughout the year as well as the award-winning Wednesday Junior Sailing community programme during the summer months. On the water activities are known to enhance self-confidence, resilience, teamwork, and leadership skills.

This year the club is celebrating its centenary with exciting events and activities planned for all ages throughout the year.
