VX One Australian Winter Nationals at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron

by Mitch Pearson 16 Jun 2021 06:30 AEST 12-13 June 2021

With the light westerly forecasted for the weekend, it was not looking promising to get many races away. However, after a three hour postponement on day one we were greeted with an unseasonal northerly of eight knots.

This year we went with a short course format which saw us racing 12, 20 minute races with one lap per race.

The highlight of the regatta was surely the battle for the podium places, which saw five different winners out of 6 races on the first day. Double Black was boat of the day after the first day and they held that lead up until the last race of the regatta, however day two was all about Mack One. With a 1, 1, 1, 4, 1 scorecard handing them the regatta win.

Even though that scorecard makes it look like they did it easy, that was far from it with boat lengths separating the top 5 boats and multiple lead changes all day, with the final top three not decided until 50m from the finish of the last race.
