All-new Otam 70HT full custom inspired by the aeronautical world

by Alice Paniccia 30 Mar 2020 05:14 PDT

With one-off design by BG Design Firm, as well as bespoke engineering and hull lines by Umberto Tagliavini Marine Design together with Otam CEO/mechanical engineer and several times Powerboat Champion Mr Gianfranco Zanoni, the new OTAM 70HT currently in build is the epitome of the dynamic performance and timeless style that has made the iconic Italian brand instantly recognizable around the world.

"The design is strongly inspired by the aeronautical world and luxury sports cars," says BG Design Firm studio, a studio that works closely with some of the world's leading auto marques. "It was essential to design the new 70-footer by taking into account the proportions and lines that have always distinguished OTAM yachts."

Conspicuous references to the automotive industry are the scooped air intakes in the hull and each side of the sunbed on the foredeck, as well in front of the windscreen and under the 'manta-ray' radar arch. These all channel air into the spacious engine room. The exhaust vents are cleverly integrated into glossy black grilles in the aft bulwarks either side of the swim platform and can be accented with strip LED lighting.

"We wanted to take the detailing to a new level on the new 70HT model," says Matteo Belardinelli, sales and communication manager for OTAM. "Meticulous attention to detail has always a hallmark of the brand and BG Design Firm interpreted our brief perfectly."

The imposing bow adds muscle to the profile and the sweeping sheer line extends in an unbroken line from stem to stern. The raked superstructure, which BG Design Firm studio compares to "the suspended cabin of an airplane", adds to the aerodynamic impression of speed and acceleration.

In fact, powered by twin 2000-hp MAN or MTU engines coupled to Arneson drives and custom Otam-Rolla propellers, the 70HT has an eye-watering top speed of 50 knots (OTAM is also looking to offer an engine option to provide higher speeds). Combined with the efficient and slippery deep-V hull with 21 degrees of deadrise for solid tracking and seakeeping, the result is a high-performance masterpiece of design and engineering. Seakeeper gyro stabilizers can also be fitted for best comfort.

As with all OTAM products, customization is key and with an overall length of 22.30 meters and a beam of 5.40 meters the 70HT offers unrivalled space and comfort for a fast luxury cruiser of her size.

The owner of the first Otam 70HT in production chose a cockpit and salon with sofa seating along the portside for hosting large groups and a comfy sunbed on top of the transom tender garage together with a second generous volume sun bed on fore deck bow area. Other options are available, however, and the second hull currently in negotiation will likely have a more classic layout with an aft-facing sunbed, no tender garage and opposing sofas in the covered salon.

There are multiple options available on the accommodation deck. The first hull currently in production has a 3-cabin layout with a full-beam owner's suite forward, separate galley and a separate crew cabin for two in the bow, but clients are free to choose their own layout solution, interiors at full client limitless choice.

"The project was developed from the start to be able to accommodate the personal preferences of our owners," says Belardinelli. "One-of-a-kind customizable construction is our calling card and no two OTAM yachts are the same. The Otam 70HT is just the latest expression of this philosophy and is already making her presence felt on the market even before the first hull has been completed."

The OTAM 70HT will make its international debut at the autumn boat shows in 2021.
