RS Aero Florida State Championship at the US Sailing Center, Jensen Beach, Florida

The Florida weather was a bit chilly on Saturday but gorgeous Sunday and champagne sailing both days at the 2020 RS Aero Florida State Championship!

I was struck by the diversity of sailors racing in this event. We had a 14 year old and sailors in their 70s. Weights ranged from 93 to 250 lbs. Everyone had fun though, in breeze that ranged from 15 or so down to about 6 knots.

Racing was generally tight, with many places being decided by only seconds on handicap with the 3 RS Aero rigs racing together.

Phil Myerson (Cedar Point YC, CT), sailing his brand new boat, steadily chipped away, scoring three 3rd place finishes in the last 3 races to land in 4th Overall, ahead of Florida local Bob Patterson (Melbourne YC, FL). Eric Aker (MA) held off the hard-charging Phil by one point to claim third.

Hank Saurage (Pontchartrain YC, LA) came on strong in the lighter winds on Saturday to claim two first places, but couldn't quite overcome Marc Jacobi's (Cedar Point YC, CT) pace in the stronger breezes.
