A Llangorse sailor will be presented with an RYA Volunteer Award by HRH The Princess Royal, President of the RYA at One Great George Street, London on Friday, 22 November.

David Hemingway will receive the RYA Community Award for Lifetime Achievement, having been a valued member of Llangorse Sailing Club (LSC) for more than 20 years, serving on the committee in a variety of key roles including Sailing Secretary, Commodore and Treasurer, a position he still holds today.

The RYA is boating's national governing body and the Volunteer Awards are considered the 'MBEs' of the sport, honouring people throughout the UK for their outstanding contributions across all the disciplines the RYA represents, including sailing, windsurfing, motor cruising, inland waterways and personal watercraft.

Hemingway was nominated for his award by his club Llangorse and selected as a winner by the RYA Honours and Awards Panel.

He has helped steer the club through many financial challenges, most notably the building of a new clubhouse and training room.

He has also been a committee member for the UK Flying Fifteen Association for many years, building the local fleet and running many successful open meetings at Llangorse.

Always keen to encourage new ideas and support club activities as Assistant Instructor and Powerboat Instructor, he organises countless socials, and gets stuck into maintenance projects as part of the informal LSC 'Thursday Club'.

He even had food hygiene training so that he could work in the galley of the new clubhouse. On top of that, he has played an essential role in updating the club website and introducing other digital tools that have increased membership engagement.

David's tremendous commitment and involvement, most often behind the scenes, has been a major support to the now thriving LSC.
