Melges 32 World Championship at Real Club Nautico Valencia - Day 1

by International Melges 32 Class Association 27 Oct 2019 16:05 PDT 24-27 October 2019

The Melges 32 World Championship, currently under way on the race course of Valencia, has come alive today with the completion, after yesterday's warm up regatta called the Garmin Race, of the first three races valid to assign the points that will determine the general and final ranking of this World Championship.

Those assigned today are heavy points that lead to the top of the standings one of the most competitive teams of the 2019 season, La Pericolosa by the German owner Christian Schwoerer (with Nick Asher on tactics). La Pericolosa precedes, after three races (whose bullets bear the signature of the Polish Casino Royal and the Italians Giogi and Calvi Network) the Melges 32 World League Champion, Caipirinha of the Italian Martin Reintjes, with a delay of 4 points on the provisional leader. In third place of this World Championship (five lengths behind the top) we find another German team, Wilma by Fritz Homanm, also winner of the Garmin Race of yesterday.

The most sensational news of this Worlds Championship though concerns the team that dominated the last two editions of the Worlds, the defending champion Tavatuy who, after three races, is out of the top ten, in twelfth position and with an already almost unbridgeable delay over the rest of the fleet (20 points from the leader).

All the races so far have been completed with a very light wind that has further complicated the tactical choices and handling of the boats, generating continuous changes of position that are reflected on a very short overall ranking, with the first seven teams enclosed in only ten points.

Tomorrow the fleet will go back to the water at 1pm for the third and penultimate day of a Melges 32 World Championship that, perhaps never like this time, has been so open and with still many stories to write before the final verdict.
