Notts County Sailing Club Spring Regatta

by David Eberlin 29 May 2019 03:16 PDT 25-27 May 2019

The Notts County Sailing Club Spring Regatta is a family orientated event with camping, socials every night and sailing, and this year saw sunshine, showers light and moderate winds, shifting in the showers.

The RS300s joined us for an Open Meeting. The event was sponsored by Rooster, Paintcraft, Flymount, Ropes 4 Boats and HB Clarke, providing lots of prizes throughout the events. Nearly 120 brought tickets to compete and socialise at the Notts County Sailing Club Spring Regatta over May Bank Holiday including 15 visitors from both local clubs and as far afield as Christchurch along with 30 juniors.

The event kicks off with pitching your tent / caravan/ motorhome then to the bar and a Friday night bring your own bbq with a band which also had juniors playing.

Saturday's first race was calm with 180' shifts then what one competitor described as a lumpy wind all over the place direction and strength though tending to be from the north west in second race. The evening saw a Pauline sausage and mash with mushy peas and mint sauce, followed by the Belvoir Big band.

Sunday was gusty the clouds again played havoc with the direction and quite a few fell in during the first race. The afternoon was a little steadier and the sun came out, along with the odd shower. The Commodore's Cup (handicap), class racing, the Regatta/Family Cup and Team racing along with Oppie racing which was more like a race to bottom as the boys sunk their boat and girls drifted to victory.

Monday started with team racing won by blue team of Rebecca Ogden, Eloise Dave, Sarah Venning and Charlie Soubry. Then Regatta cup had its final race. Followed by Commodores cup, and class Racing. Finally the duck race in aid of Parkinson's UK was held, raising a commendable £369 for the charity.

The Commodore's Cup is a handicap series of three races, started in two fleets. Tim Hand from Swarkstone SC took his Solo to a clear victory with three firsts. Ross Ryan and Oliver Ryan-Moore from Notts County was second 4 points behind, with Luke Hardy and John Wells from the home club third.

The class racing saw Tim Hand win the handicap fleet with Rob and Karen Bell / Shaunagh Lea second. Laser was won by Andy Stewart, RS400 Ross Ryan & Oliver, Scorpion (the largest class) was Chloe Willars and John Talby

The juniors had an excellent representation from Toppers and Oppies, Cillian Dylan from Notts County winning two races in his Optimist, Gwyneth Lanyon was second, Charles Miles Hayler was third.

The Regatta /family Cup for novices saw Gwinith Lanyon win with Charles Miles-Hayler second, Sammy Mason third all in Toppers from Notts County. Glyn Ritchie with junior crews Alison, Eaun, Gwyneth won the adults Regatta prize.

James Logan the Vice Commodore, who organised the event said: "Thanks to all our sponsors Rooster, Paintcraft, Flymount, Ropes 4 Boats and HB Clarke. What a friendly regatta with lots of buddies, especially the juniors. It's great to see so many on the water and at the socials over the weekend. Here's to next year."
