Having been involved in this industry for more than thirty-six years, it never fails to impress me the way designers and experts come up with developments of existing ideas.
The following announcement of a foiling monohull is no exception. Twelve months work and investment from a highly experienced Australian group has led to the development of a 15.2m fully foiling design intended for the 2019 Rolex Sydney-Hobart Yacht Race. Performance predictions for the design suggest that, in certain conditions, it is capable of leading the 30m maxis over the 630 nautical miles of the RSHYR.
It's not only new designs that expand potential ideas. Celebrating the 2019 Transport and Logistics Innovation Week (SITL), and one day before the Maritime Day, Groupe Beneteau has confirmed its interest in the NEOLINE project for the transatlantic transportation of its boats. Groupe Beneteau, has found a solution with the service offered by NEOLINE to facilitate its exports, while significantly reducing its environmental impact. NEOLINE is developing a highly energy-efficient transatlantic transport line with innovative cargo sailing ships specialized in rolling and oversized freight. Scheduled to start up in 2021, this route will link Saint-Nazaire in France to America's East Coast and Saint-Pierre and Miquelon.
Without discussion none of these developments would happen and Navico recently revealed its plans for high-end electronics, mapping and audio brands Lowrance, Simrad, B&G, C-MAP and JL Audio/Clarion at its annual Australia and New Zealand Dealer Conference held in the Gold Coast, QLD Australia. The yearly conference brings Navico product managers, technical experts, marketing and sales executives from all over the world for three days of on-water trials, presentations and training for the dealer channel.
Another gathering of experts will meet at the Marinas19 International Conference and Trade Exhibition. The Conference will examine the big questions for marinas to 2030. What is the future of boat ownership and marina customers? What are the risks and opportunities associated with changes in technology enabled consumer behaviour? What are the risks and opportunities associated with changes in the interaction of climate change, propulsion technologies, government regulation and consumer expectations?
Trailer boat buyers will be pleased to know that the Rosehill Trailer Boat Show makes its much-anticipated return to Rosehill Gardens Racecourse on 6 and 7 April 2019 between 10am and 5pm, featuring more than 30 exhibitors with over 250 boats on display at the free-to-enter event. And there's free parking included. This year for the first time, the exhibition moves to the Grand Pavilion, a vast double-storey indoor space which, along with adjacent undercover areas, meets the requirements of this year's trailer boating show.
This week's boat study involves the Aquilla 36 from resident editor John Curnow. His report starts here. "So, you start with a package that we have been seriously impressed with since we first had a go a couple of years back now. At the time, we dubbed her the Great Entertainer, but we also understood just how much of a great transformer she was."
"The Aquila 36's incredible versatility as a boat, a platform, and a vessel, meant she could be a family cruiser, weekender, terrific day boat, VIP passenger transfer ferry, a foiler, also a capable offshore fisherman, and then perform all of them with serious aplomb."
