The "No-Motor" offers surf anglers a chance to win awesome prizes while aiding restoration efforts for the Carpinteria Salt Marsh. Anglers compete mano a mano on the beach, in kayaks or on stand up paddleboards, vying for prizes including fishing tackle, rods or stand-up paddleboard.
The No-Motor is an annual tradition with proceeds donated to the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County for their Carpinteria Salt Marsh restoration efforts. Competition starts at first light on Saturday November 3 and home base for the tourney is again Danny's Deli on Carp Avenue. For information: info@sportfishingconservancy.org.
California law defines environmental justice (EJ) as the fair treatment of people of all races, cultures, and incomes with respect to the development, adoption, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies.
In light of the potential resource impacts, EJ is an emerging policy that fishing communities need to be aware of. On Tuesday October 2, the California State Lands Commission is holding a community outreach meeting to share information about their draft environmental justice policy and to learn more about how the Commission can better identify and address concerns impacting communities.
While there are no current threats to fishers, in light of the linkage to California's natural resources, we need to be aware of this emerging policy. The roundtable will provide an opportunity to better understand and to inform the SLC about concerns and priorities.
The meeting will run from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Westside Community Church - 1594 W. Willow Street, Long Beach.
