Last weekend (1st/2nd September) saw the second Topper traveller in the 2018/19 Scottish traveller series at Nairn Sailing Club. A total of 17 Toppers assembled from all over Scotland and took part in the racing.

Saturday morning very still and even by the time of the 10:00 there was still not enough wind to race, however soon after launching the wind filled in slightly from the West.

Saturday's three races were in very light and fluky conditions with the third race of the day being a lottery as to whether you managed to stay in a patch of wind. Results across the fleet reflected the fluky conditions but Tom Mitchell and Jamie Briggs sailed consistently and managed a suite of first and second places respectively.

Following an early finish due to the committee boat needing to get into the harbour before the tide got too low; the club laid on beach games for us all – highlights were football, trolley racing, sandcastle building, tyre rolling and tug-of-war.

Sunday dawned windless as forecast but by the time we launched had started blowing from the West. Tom again managed to win both races that were run closely followed by Alastair Coombs with two second places. By the time the second race had finished, the wind had built up to a point where a significant portion of the fleet were capsizing and with the prospect of a ever building forecast the race committee called it a day.

Once the results were calculated the winner overall was Tom Mitchell, second place went to Jamie Briggs and third to Alastair Coombs. First girl was Eilidh McQueen closely followed by Nairn sailor Jasmin Robertson.

Thanks Nairn sailing club for hosting a great weekend. The Topper fleet are now looking forward to the Zone championships in Helensburgh at the end of the month.
