2018 ARC Portugal: Povoa de Varzim: First Portuguese stop

by World Cruising Club 14 Jun 2018 19:50 PDT

Yesterday, the fleet arrived at Clube Naval Povoense, in Povoa de Varzim, where they crossed the line in good time due to the north winds that favoured the boats to have a wonderful sail on the second leg to sunny Portugal. Arriving close together, the berthing was quite challenging for some boats in the high winds.

The prizegiving for Leg 2 took place at the yacht club restaurant, where participants had a welcome drink followed by a Portuguese cuisine dinner, to everyone’s taste.

The awarded boats for this leg were, starting with Class B: In 3rd place, yacht Sheer Indulgence, in 2nd place Miss Julia and as overall winner A Capella. In Class A: The winner was A’assifa, followed by Moondance and in 3rd place Carioca.

The smiley-miley winner was A Capella (for third time in a row), guessing 1.2 Km out from the correct answer; the ETA competition was won by Southerner guessing 8 minutes off their actual arrival time.

Today the fleet had the morning off to explore the town of Povoa de Varzim during which the participants enjoyed an early lunch before their trip programmed by the Marina to visit Guimaraes. The guided tour explained about the birth place of Portugal, with its historic castle, monument of the first King of Portugal, and various churches. They had some free time for a beer in the sunshine before heading back to Povoa de Varzim.
