Peru's Jean Paul de Trazegnies sailed consistently to claim the 2018 South American & Caribbean Championship. The regatta was held at Marina Puerto Velero in Tubara, Colombia and was attended by 42 sailors from eight different nations.
World Champion Alonso Collantes could not recover from a 7-point deficit to catch Trazegnies, who took the lead from Day 1 and never looked back, winning 5 races and dropping a 6th on race 3. Rounding out the top five were David Hernandez from Guatemala in third, Agustin Lazaro Lugo from Puerto Rico in fourth, and Martin Alsogaray from Argentina in fifth.
Caterina Romero was the Top Female and 10th overall, 1980 World Champion Cor Van Aanholt was the Top Master and 7h overall, Alejandro Mago was the top youth.
Puerto Rico and Cuba clinched the two 2019 Pan Am berths and will join Guatemala, Argentina, and Ecuador and host country Peru at the continental games next year.
The six remaining Pan Am berths will be decided at the 2018 USSCA North Americans in Waukegan, Illinois in August and the 2019 ISCA South American & Caribbean Championship to be held in Peru (dates TBA).
