The Opening Day of fleet racing in the 2018 Toyota NZ Optimist Nationals got underway on Saturday on Queen Charlotte Sound, at the northern tip of the South Island of New Zealand.
190 sailors from New Zealand, Australia and Tahiti are competing.
With a light Northerly already present in the morning, the D flag was put up on time and the Open Fleet headed out the Harbour.
With not much wind expected the next morning the sailing instructions were already changed to make it possible to sail four races.
Conditions were tricky, occasional shifty and patchy conditions fooled several sailors. Overall it was a great day.
The four races for the Yellow, Blue and Red fleet were sailed without much difficulty.
George Lee Rush from Wakatere Boating Club and Lucas Day of Murrays Bay Sailing Club, ending on equal points with 1 drop after Day 1.
