In early 2018, the R/V Martin Sheen headed to the remote island of Kiribati to launch Operation Clean Waves.

The nation is surrounded by coral reefs and is home to a wide variety of marine species. It is facing various threats, such as plastic pollution, shark finning, over-fishing, ocean acidification, drought, and climate change. This campaign set out to mitigate the effects of these threats.

The crew of the Martin Sheen collected plastic debris, as well as helped to develop a long-term recycling plan. They investigated how human activity is affecting the reefs, suggested marine protected areas, and conducted a coral propagation project.

Finally, Sea Shepherd brought clean water solutions such as filters, guttering, and cisterns, and had a representative from Waves for Water sail with us to assess clean water access challenges facing the inhabitants of the isolated island.

Our oceans are under threat and we need your help. You can be a part-time hero for the oceans by volunteering on our various campaigns.

We understand that not everyone can serve on our vessels. Luckily, there are other ways you can help, such as attending a Sea Shepherd event, making a one-time donation, shopping on our e-store, or becoming a member of the Direct Action Crew (DAC), where your recurring monthly donations help us plan and budget our life-saving campaigns.
