New monohull record in the New Caledonia Groupama Race

by Groupama Race 28 Sep 2016 00:26 PDT 25 September 2016

Scallywag, the longest monohull, is also the fastest boat to sail around New-Caledonia. She takes only 2 days, 13 hours, 19 min and 55s. Thus, she has established a new record for monohulls.

Scallywag's skipper was expecting a "battle" with Vodafone however the team arrived less than 13 hours late behind the trimaran. If for Michel Desjoyeaux and Franck Cammas, Orma 60 boats are amazing in speed, the Scallywag's performance is extraordinary. On board, the crew is glad for his regatta and keeps a good memory sailing through the Canal Woodin at 24 knots.

Beau Geste and Ichi Ban are the next 2 boats expected to arrive in Noumea. Scallywag keeps an eye on Beau Geste arrival as IRC corrected time results are involved.

Up North, the night was very quiet with "no wind". The boats went through the Grand Passage only at dawn. The Grand Passage is usually known for its high seas and strong wind but not for this time...

Now it's time to get back to Noumea! The second round has started! Because of the wind, the boats will have to tack and tack again...

After 4 days of race, 3 boats are left on the East coast: Gummo-Phytocal, Odyssey and Diogène. They will go through the Grand Passage during the day. We have called them, they are positive!

Regarding the results, Notorious achieved a good performance during the last night whereas Banque de Nouvelle-Calédonie confirms her chance to win in ORC.
