Scottish Topper Traveller at Tarbert Loch Fyne Yacht Club

by Bill Young 11 Jul 2005 00:31 PDT 9-10 July 2005

A large fleet (46) of Toppers and Optimist took to the waters of Loch Fyne in what proved to be a very important event for the Scottish Topper class.

Saturday started with three races in quick succession, and Emma Wilkie (Largs SC) made her intentions known with two wins, snatching her first from Rona Young Tarbert (Loch Fyne YC) on the line.

In race three Rona Young reversed the places with Emma, winning in fine style. In the development Fleet, local sailor Lorenzo Chiavarini, had a clean sweep of the three races to lead club rival James Minshall by three points.

Sunday started with a distinct lack of wind and a postponment was necessary. Once the fleet took to the water an hour late, a hopeful race officer, Andy Peden, set a windward/leeward course well out into the Loch. Rona Young won the first race of the day and had a great battle with fellow club sailor, Niall McLeod in the second race, but Niall eventually took his first race of the series.

The lateness and light winds prevented a sixth race, and the fleet went ashore exhausted, but happy.

Overall, Rona Young took victory in the Traveller closely followed by Emma Wilkie, then Anna Gorskowska (Loch Venacher) and Amy Buchan (CCC) making the winners rostrum almost an all girls afair, except for Niall McLeod (TLFYC).
