The bi-annual international K6 regatta for the Owen Torrey trophy took place at the American Yacht Club in New York over the memorable weekend of the 26-28th October. Racing was supposed to be over the three days, however Friday produced no wind and Sunday was the beginning of Hurricane Sandy. In spite of only one days sailing, 7 races were efficiently run by the professional race team in a glorious Autumnal 12 knots of breeze.

During the first races Neil Fulcher & Lawrence Crispin from the UK showed they were a force to be reckoned with, winning by a comfortable margin. However Jim Wilson from the home club was not far behind and in the middle of the day as the wind dropped slightly he took advantage of his lighter weight to win 3 of the next races. Ian Robson and his aptly named crew Sandy Johnson were always there or there about but were not as consistent as both Neil and Jim.

In the end it was Jim Wilson who was able to take advantage of his down wind speed to win a crucial race where Neil and Lawrence fell to 6th. With all races to count it was Jim Wilson who took the trophy by 3 points.

A big thanks must go to the American Yacht Club for hosting the event and to the members who accommodated the British and overseas teams. The loss of racing through Hurricane Sandy has not deterred the Europeans from coming back and we hope the club will soon be back to normal.
