Topper Open at Ely Sailing Club

by John Wells 13 Jun 2011 01:30 PDT 4 June 2011

Twelve toppers contested the Ely SC Open in an exciting north easterly wind force 3 gusting 4.

The first race saw George Hunter over the line and Scott Bilham (at 19 the old man of the fleet) taking an early lead. He later slowed allowing Penny Wieser past to finish the race first with another young lady, Georgia Grice second and George Hunter having made a great come back after his error at the start finishing third.

The second got off to a clean start though there were a few altercations around the starboard end of the line. George Hunter took an early lead and maintained it to the finish. Penny Wieser held second place until the last lap where Georgia Grice overtook, having fault from 5th position. Georgia unfortunately was later disqualified for not giving Penny enough water on the penultimate mark. A great shame as she sailed a great race. Scott Bilham having had bad start came through to finish in 3rd place.

Race 3 saw George Hunter take an early lead with Jack Knight and Penny Wieser following. However, George let both Jack and Penny through on the 4th lap. With the no more position changes Jack won the race with Penny 2nd and George 3rd.
