by Elena Giolai on 17 Jul 2013
51st World Optimist Championships officially open Matías Capizzano/Optiworlds http://www.capizzano.com/
The 51st World Optimist Championships officially opened in Riva del Garda, Italy, organised by Fraglia Vela Riva in collaboration with IODA (the International Optimist Class) in the presence of ISAF President Carlo Croce, Olympian Alessandra Sensini and IODA President Peter Barckley.

A record number of 58 countries from five continents are taking part, this possibly being one of the World Championships with the most nations participating. Registrations, which closed after the tonnage procedures, gave us the final total of 254 competitors. Peter Barclay (Peru, IODA President since 2006) handed over to Carlo Croce ( Italian, elected to ISAF presidency in November last year) to declare the 2013 Optimist World Championships 'Open'!

The regattas get under way tomorrow, scheduled for late morning.
