Toyota NZ Optimist Championships - Day 1

by Sail-World on 7 Apr 2007
Chris Steele (Wakatere) seen here sailing in the 2006 Nationals is leading after day 1 od the 2007 Toyota Optimist Nationals at Napier Richard Gladwell www.photosport.co.nz

Chris Steele from Wakatere BC leads the 2007 Toyota Optimist Nationals being sailed at Napier Sailing Club. He is tied on points with Alex Maloney (Kerikeri/MBSC).

There are two Singaporean sailors in the top five. A second Wakatere sailor, Logan Dunning-Beck is in fourth overall.

The regatta got underway on Thursday when competitors participated in a march past at Napier’s Soundshell and gardens; wild weather had cleared by the time of the opening for sailors and their supporters; each club (and nationality) was represented in the parade.

The sailors were led by Napier’s own living Art Deco icon, Bertie, dressed in his period 1930s costume, and Captain George Gunn, himself an icon of New Zealand’s marine history.

The nationals were officially opened by Napier Mayor Barbara Arnott, who retold the story of George Gunn, as a young 16 year old deck hand aboard the Pamir, an old sailing ship that traded the Horn. He slipped while fixing the rigging and – lucky for him - fell into the sea. Stopping a massive sailing ship cannot be undertaken at speed, and a mile later, the Pamir was finally pulled to a halt. Lucky for George, he was a strong swimmer, and swam the mile to catch up with ship.

Napier Sailing Club Commodore Amanda Wilson, NZIODA chairman Kevin Brown, and Toyota representative Mr Saunders also spoke.

Racing Day 1

Chris Steele showed superior speed and skill in the first day of racing at the Toyota Optimist Nationals sailed at Napier yesterday (Friday) to be leading the regatta.

Three races were sailed in light sea breezes ranging from 4 to 6 knots. Conditions were tricky for the sailors, with a short chop and a shifty sea breeze.

Numbers in the open fleet have been buoyed by international entries, 13 from Australia, 7 Noumeans and 7 Singaporeans, taking the total to 167.

Chris, who is a member of the Wakatere club in Auckland, won the second and third races of the three sailed yesterday. In the second race, he won the start and had a brilliant first beat and led most of the way around the course. He went wide on the downwind legs of the race.

He shares the same points as Alex Maloney, but Chris is winning on countback with two wins to his credit. Alex is sailing under the joint clubs of Murrays Bay and Kerikeri. She was the most consistent of the day, collecting a fourth, second and third. Alex will be looking to make up for disappointment last year where she finished in sixth position on count back, missing a trip to the world championships. In recent regattas Alex has shown she is a contender for the title.

Last year’s winner, Marcus Hansen (Murray’s Bay), produced a mixed bag on his first racing day. He won the first race of the day, but was Z-flagged which meant he had to carry a 20 per cent penalty. In the second race he finished 23, and by the end of the day was back on form with a second placing.

Logan Dunning-Beck (Wakatere) is sitting in fourth place, but will be the one to watch. He has won all of the major regattas this season, including the North Islands.

The best local effort has been from Sam Mackay who has sailed consistently to finish in seventh place.

Light and shifty conditions are expected for Day 2 which could make it difficult getting races away.
