One of the most unusual Yacht Club meetings in the world is just about to take place in the centre of Australia. For the first time in 20 years, the Cooper Creek is crossing the Birdsville Track and the Lake Eyre Yacht Club is to hold its 10th Birthday Regatta, from fifth to 9th July, 2010.

It is to be held on Lake Killamperpunna, Cooper Creek, from the 5 - 9th July 2010. To sail on lakes in this area is a rarer opportunity than sailing on Lake Eyre itself.


The event is being held on Etadunna Pastoral Lease managed by Jason & Patsy Dunn. They are about 160km up the Birdsville Track north of Marree. Today the “Track” is a well graded highway.

In keeping with the Club’s fun approach to yachting in the outback events will be laid back - no strict racing rules. Participants may even choose to design their own events - the emphasis is on enjoying the rare privilege of
sailing in the desert.

A bush camping area on the edge of the Lake Killamperpunna will be supplied with firewood for use in approved fireplaces, and there'll be Cooper Creek water for washing.

It won't be good for keel boats however - they'll be off-the-beach sized yachts with appropriate safety gear as required by SA Marine Authority, or trailer sailors. While it's possible for a two-wheel-drive vehicle to make the journey, most participants are expected to take 4WD's.

Participants will have to camp, and even caravans have to be handled with care to make the journey. Drinking water will also have to be carried, as they are not recommending drinking the Cooper Creek water.

Spectators and day visitors are welcome.

If you're game, this sounds like a wonderful adventure and a unique experience - if you're not so inclined, it may sound something like a sailing nightmare. Either way, it is an experience you'd remember for the rest of your life.
