420 Sailors lead Australian charge at Youth Worlds

by Di Pearson on 13 Jul 2004
Australian competitors at the Volvo ISAF Youth Worlds in Gdynia, Poland, are maintaining their excellent performances on Day 3, with a further three races in the changeable shifty winds that have dominated the event to-date.

Leading the defence’s charge are West Aussie girls, Elise Rechichi/Tessa Parkinson in the 420 Girls and Nathan Outteridge/Iain Jensen in the 420 Boys.

The girls actually had their worst result – an 11th in the first race of the day, but backed it up with a win in the next race to hold off their nearest rivals, Lydia Koppin/Kristina Kummer (GER) by a large 13 point lead after one race drop.

In the Boys, Outterdge/Jensen from NSW have an even bigger lead of 20 points after 1-2-1 results overnight. With a worst result of fourth place, brothers Thomas and Mathieu Rahier (FRA) will have to put in a lot of work to catch up.

Simon Morgan (NSW) in the Laser Boys is snapping at the heals of the current second and third placed competitors, only three and one point respectively between him in fourth place and the former. Perhaps sailing against the likes of the top Laser sailors in the world at his previous event has made the difference. He had two wins earlier in the event, but yesterday’s best result was a fourth in the final race.

Sailing in the Laser Radial Girls, Samantha Boyd dropped down to 12th overnight, after a DNF in the first race of the day. Even using this as her race drop, her other results on the day, 11th and 14th, did not help her cause to stay in touch with the top three.

In other results, Michael Pfeffer/Kiralee Houlahan are doing well to maintain seventh place in the Hobie class, whilst Corey Plant’s 13th place in the Mistral Boys dropped him down to sixth place overall, but he is still in touch with the leaders, whilst in the Mistral Girls, Alisha Kawalla is in eighth place with some consistent mid-field results.
