US Sailing to roll out updated racing rules app in December

by US Sailing 31 Oct 2024 09:07 PDT

As the countdown to the 2025 rules cycle begins, US Sailing is excited to announce the arrival of the Racing Rules of Sailing 2025-2028 app in December, preceded by the release of three newly updated books from Dave Perry, a renowned sailing expert, coach, and author, whose dedication to educating sailors has spanned over four decades.

The Racing Rules of Sailing?is published every four years by World Sailing, the international authority for the sport. These rules, amended by US prescriptions, govern sailboat racing in the United States and the portions of international races that pass through U.S. waters.?

In January 2025, the 2025-2028 edition of The Racing Rules of Sailing, Including the US Sailing prescriptions will go into effect, guiding competitors through the next Olympic quadrennium.

After the rules were published by World Sailing in July 2024, a few errors and conflicts were identified. These issues will be addressed during the upcoming World Sailing Annual Conference in Singapore, November 4-9, 2024.

In response to these developments, US Sailing will release an updated version of the rules via a free mobile app in December 2024, with printed copies available from the US Sailing store in late January 2025.

"US Sailing makes the rules available whenever and wherever you want. Our premier product, the Racing Rules app, ensures you always have access to the rules," says Matthew Hill, Race Administration Director at US Sailing. "You can submit a protest or request redress from your device, draw and submit animated protest diagrams with the Whiteboard feature, and much more using the Racing Rules app."

US Sailing has expanded the menu of app features to streamline the overall user experience. This app provides optimized and searchable access to the rules, Appeals and Case books, and media resources to help sailors reference them in real-time.

As sailors prepare for the 2025 rules cycle, they can also look forward to Dave Perry's three updated books, launching on December 1, 2024:

  • Understanding the Racing Rules of Sailing through 2028
  • Winning in One-Designs
  • Dave Perry's 100 Best Racing Rules Quizzes

These publications offer sailors a comprehensive understanding of racing rules and tactics, with practical examples, case studies, and expert commentary to guide sailors of all levels.

Understanding the Racing Rules of Sailing through 2028, featuring illustrations by Brad Dellenbaugh, simplifies the complex world of racing rules for newcomers, and incorporate US Sailing Appeals and World Sailing Cases for more advanced rule interpretation.

For competitive racers, Winning in One-Designs is a go-to resource. Long regarded as one of the best books on sailboat racing, the book includes advanced strategies and tips to help sailors of all levels reduce mistakes, sail faster, and gain a competitive edge.

In Dave Perry's 100 Best Racing Rules Quizzes, Perry challenges sailors to test their understanding of the rules with 100 practical scenarios, including 25 new quizzes. With detailed explanations of each scenario, it is an essential tool for any sailor aiming to sharpen their rule knowledge.

As a five-time U.S. Match Racing Champion and longstanding Chair of the US Sailing Appeals Committee, Perry's expertise in racing rules and tactics has had a profound impact on sailors across the nation. His leadership, paired with his instructional books and seminars, has helped countless sailors improve their racing skills through practical, strategic coaching.

"Dave Perry's dedication to advancing sailing education is unmatched, and these upcoming releases will continue to empower sailors and race officials in mastering the intricacies of competitive racing," says Hill.
