Successful Safety at Sea presentation at PCYC

by Sail-World Canada on 26 Nov 2012
Captain Eric Hill begins his presentation Guy Perrin http://sail-world.com
Earlier this week, Captain Eric Hill of Royal Canadian Air Force Maritime Helicopter Tactics provided an informative and possibly life-saving presentation on Safety at Sea to an attentive audience at the Port Credit Yacht Club in Mississauga, ON. The free presentation, co-sponsored by Chubb Insurance and Canadian Yachting magazine, was open to the general public and attracted a full room. Tanya Eyram from Chubb Insurance opened the evening with a short presentation on safety concerns from an insurer’s perspective and set the tone for the evening by engaging the audience on this important topic.

Captain Eric Hill is a yacht training and safety consultant based in Halifax, NS. He is the offshore training skipper for the Royal Canadian Navy and holds a commercial endorsement for sailing vessels to 200 gt and is a qualified RYA/CYA radar, diesel, and commercial Yachtmaster instructor. In addition to being one of only two Yachtmaster instructors in Canada, he is an endorsed ISAF Sea Survival instructor for offshore racing and is a qualified Advanced Medical First Responder. His sailing background is complemented by two decades of knowledge and experience as a Military Officer in the maritime domain. Trained as an Air Navigator, he has commanded missions aboard Sea King helicopters flying from warships in operational, humanitarian, and high seas rescue missions in five of the world’s oceans prior to becoming a subject matter expert in the field of operational test and evaluation, quantifying systems risk and human performance above, on and below the sea.

In 2010, the Nova Scotia Yachting the Association named him Male Sailor of the Year by for outstanding contribution to the sport of sailing. In 2011 he participated in Transport Canada’s revision of safety requirements for pleasure craft used for commercial purposes. This most recent 2-hour presentation has left many of the participants interested in participating in the full 2-day session, complete with hands-on activities such as live flare practice and in-water sessions with life rafts. Captain Hill has already offered many of these sessions, mostly to yacht racers and offshore cruisers, across the country and his services can be retained by your local yacht club.
