The M Class association with the support of Hyundai Motors New Zealand and the Royal Akarana Yacht Club are proud to announce the celebrations for the 90th anniversary of M-Class yacht racing.

The 2012/13 season will mark 90 uninterrupted seasons of racing on Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour for the iconic M-Class, affectionately known as the ‘Emmy’.

season’s first regatta is set for Auckland Anniversary Day, 28 January. This will mark the 90th Year that the Emmies have competed in this regatta, a record for any class.

The official celebration of the anniversary will see a social race from the Royal Akarana Yacht Club at Auckland’s Okahu Bay on Saturday, 16 March, with celebrations to follow that evening at the RAYC.

M-Class Association President, Bruce Craies says the yachts were originally designed by Arch Logan, and the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron adopted the design in 1922.

'It’s a fantastic story of comradeship. I bet it would have never occurred to Arch or the Squadron that these yachts would still be racing in 90 years’ time,' he says.

'These 18-foot Kauri clinker boats are one of the few traditional racing yachts that have survived the relentless march of progress. This is testimony to their quality and the fine New Zealand sportsmen committed to the class.

'We’d like to invite all current and previous M-Class sailors, young and old, to get in touch to join us in celebrating this iconic class and the season – and to toast to the future of many more. Interested sailors can register for the events at mclass-yachts.co.nz.' says Mr Craies.

The M Class is one of the last remaining and most popular traditional racing yacht classes.

Hyundai Motors New Zealand General Manager Andy Sinclair says his team is incredibly proud to be involved as sponsor.

'Sailing is an iconic part of summer for many Kiwis and these boats are an integral part of NZ’s rich sailing history. Hyundai is happy to support Kiwi’s enjoying the water, whether they’re sailing competitively, enjoying a hobby or simply appreciating the open air' says Mr Sinclair.
