World-Class Facility Takes Shape in Sydney

The Rozelle site will house the full range of marine services. MIAA
After years of detailed research and planning, construction is now well under way for Sydney City Marine’s world class facility located adjacent to Sydney’s Anzac Bridge at Rozelle Bay in Sydney Harbour.

Scheduled to open in late 2008, the state-of-art facility will employ the latest in international technology making it the most advanced and environmentally friendly facility in Australia for the refit, service, repair and maintenance of vessels.

Works are proceeding to schedule on the project’s enclosed paint shops and work bays, the undercover and open hard-stand areas, the contractor/tenant workshops, the administration offices and amenities, foreshore revetment works, car-parks and the Longitude Commercial Building which will include first rate restaurant facilities and fringe-CBD professional offices.

For the floating components of the facility, Walcon Marine Australia has been chosen to design and supply the heavy duty commercial pontoons, bridges and associated services for the 360 metres of the marina. These sections are now ready for transport to the Rozelle Bay site for installation on completion of the foreshore revetment and piling works currently underway.

The key features of the new world class Sydney City Marine shipyard are:

• Over 360 linear metres of modern heavy duty commercial marina facility
• State of the art multi-purpose boat handling equipment
• Purpose built paint spray workshops of the highest environmental integrity
• Water 'farming', treatment and recycling facility
• 3200m2 of undercover all weather hardstand
• 6200m2 of open hardstand
• Capability to lift vessels to 55m in length, to 13m in beam and to 800 tonnes
• 8m clear water depth at low tide
• Easy road access from all directions and within 4 km from the centre of Sydney

Sydney City Marine was conceived and founded by two renowned Sydney boating and business personalities, Tony Ellis and Brian James.

Tony is an avid sailor with 40 Sydney to Hobart races under his belt. With an eye for detail developed through years of running his own successful business, Tony is well qualified to oversee the construction of the facility.

Brian also has owned and operated highly successful businesses ranging from marine and aircraft container repair activities to petroleum distribution. As a past Board Member of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, of which he has been a member for the last 35 years, Brian is also an avid sailor having owned yachts and cruisers on Sydney Harbour.

Both Tony and Brian have an extensive knowledge of the boat service and repair industry and the needs of boat owners when it comes to attention to detail.

Tony’s and Brian’s strategy for success is to make Sydney City Marine a 'one stop shop', with a highly experienced marine industry 'cluster' of quality operatives, capable of catering to and servicing the boating needs of recreational boat owners, the Sydney charter fleet, commercial vessels, the Royal Australian Navy and local and visiting super-yachts. Their philosophy is simply that 'every customer is important and the customer service delivered by Sydney City Marine will be the best, not only on Sydney’s waterfront, but in Australia'.

Sydney City Marine will offer a comprehensive range of services including:

• Diesel engine servicing and repair
• Gearbox and drive train repair and servicing
• Specialist painting to exacting standards
• General vessel painting
• Glass fibre repairs
• Aluminium and steel repair/fabrication
• All types of plumbing
• Teak decking
• Water maker and air conditioning servicing
• Electrical and electronics repair and servicing
• Hydraulic repair and servicing
• Interior fit out
• High pressure washing and antifouling
• Mast and rig repairs and servicing
• Hull survey
• Hull polishing and detailing
• Interior cleaning and detailing
• Biminis and covers
• Polished stainless steel fabrication

Many of these services will be provided by qualified and experienced service technicians who have already committed to taking up workshops in the Sydney City Marine precinct:

The Sydney City Marine facility will also showcase state-of-the-art environmental technology in its operations and will be a leader in environmental protection practices for the Australian marine industry.

Sydney City Marine will have two purpose-built fully enclosable spray bays with over 900m2 of direct covered hardstand. These bays have split-system extraction units giving optimum airflow past the painter with inline particle filters removing over 95% of dust or overspray within the building, ensuring a better finish and a safer working environment.

All water run-off, including rainwater from the roofs of buildings, will be captured thus ensuring negligible run-off into the Sydney Harbour waterways. All run-off will be stored in 3 water storage tanks with a total capacity of 450,000 litres. This 'farmed' water will be used for a range of purposes including boat wash-down and cleaning, again to be re-gathered and pumped to the water treatment plant ready for reuse.

To further satisfy the needs of discerning vessel owners, there will be a 150 seat restaurant located in the adjoining and attractive 'Longitude Commercial Building' offering a high quality menu and with expansive sweeping views across Sydney Harbour and the Harbour Bridge.
