SOS Ocean Racing's Ian Thomson is now 28 days in and is two thirds of the way to through the Southern Ocean voyage from Cape Leeuwin to the southern tip of Tasmania.

The winds have increased for him today currently gusting between 15 to 20 knots, which means he has started seeing the real side to the Southern Ocean. Ian may be covering more ground but also has to go through much bigger waves.

In the next few days Ian should round the bottom of Tasmania and will start heading back north, ‘I look forward to rounding Tassie because it means I will not only have 1624 nautical miles to go but also the weather will start to getting warmer!'

Ian has had the A3 spinnaker up all day and expects the wind to increase later today.

Save Our Seas Ocean Racing, the 40ft Welbourn yacht is currently located 200nm WSW of Victoria's Cape Nelson, with around 2080nm to the finish, which puts him two thirds of the way to the finish line.

Ian aim is to be back under 40 days; at the moment his current estimated finish time is still the 14th of June, beating the old record that stands at 68 days 8 hours and 30. Ian has been cruising 12 to 7 knots today and is expected to round the bottom of Tasmania later this week.

SOS Ocean Racing is about raising awareness of what damage plastic bags does to the environment, in particular the marine environment. With over 100,000 marine animals and 1 million sea birds dying from plastic suffocation or entanglement every year, it is time to get rid of the 'Convenient' plastic bag and use other options.
