Hong Kong celebrates success at Asian Sailing Championships

by HK Sailing Federation on 30 Mar 2012
Hong Kong medal winners - 15th Asian Sailing Championships, 2012 Rory Godman
Hong Kong sailors and windsurfers united to represent Hong Kong at the 15th Asian Sailing Championships and brought home 9 medals, including two Gold – a new record for Hong Kong sailors and windsurfers. The event was held in Langkawi, Malaysia at the country’s National Sailing Centre in February 2012.

275 sailors from 19 different countries inc. HK, Malaysia, China, India, Japan, Singapore, Thailand and Korea took part in this event. With 25 boats and 35 sailors, HK entered the highest number of sailors and participated in all but the Match Racing category.

Warwick Downes, the Team Manager was thrilled with the results and commented, 'We always expected the wind surfers to do well, considering how solid Hong Kong has become in this sport. The medal we got in Hobie 16 was also sort of expected and Nagisa Sakai (Laser Radial) is a strong sailor. But the rest was a bit unknown. Cosmas and Nathan's category (29er) is new to us, so it was great to see them win so comprehensively.'

The racing was by no means straightforward and most medals were not secured until the last day of sailing resulting in some nervous times for our sailors and windsurfers. With results like these, and from such youngsters, Hong Kong has a very bright future ahead.

To celebrate the outstanding success of this Hong Kong Sailing Team, the HKSF will be hosting a BBQ at the Hong Kong Sea School at 1830hrs on Friday 30th March.
