Emerging Nations Programme – Philippines sailor wins RS-X Class

Emerging Nations Programme (ENP) Regatta was bound to be a success with 40 competitors from more than 10 nations racing on the World Championship courses today.

Light winds in the morning meant the racing was at a slow pace but this did not stop the athletes from 'giving it their all'. The seabreeze picked up for more favourable sailing conditions in the afternoon.

In only his first ENP Camp, Reneric Moreno, of the Phillipines, took out the Gold Medal winning position in the RS:X class, with Australian RS:X Champion Tim Gourlay coming in second.

Serbian ENP sailors Milica Dukic and Maja Knezevic placed fifth and sixth in the Laser Radial class, respectively.

In the Laser full-rig, Columbian athlete Andrey Quintero came in third, behind Tristan Brown and Russell McGovern, proving that the skills and knowledge he has gained during his first ENP Camp have been invaluable.

The Emerging Nations Programme Regatta brings to a close the fourth ENP Programme. The ENP is a Perth 2011 initiative that invites top athletes from developing sailing nations to Perth, to train under world-class sailing coaches.

This regatta provided the opportunity for the ENP athletes to hone their newly acquired skills, sailing against some of Australia's best in the sport, including several athletes who train with the Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS).

Volunteers and the Perth 2011 Event team also gained experience from the regatta, assisting them to develop the elite skills and knowledge required for the main test event - the Perth International Regatta - which will be held in November 2010.
