Donzi Debuts Limited Edition “009” Models

Donzi’s 22 Classic 009 Limited Edition Mario Vazquez

Donzi Marine has unveiled two ultra-high performance, commemorative “009” models, the Sarasota, Florida-based powerboat builder announced today. Available in 22-foot and 35-foot versions, the new 009s have been designed to commemorate Donzi’s pioneering contributions to offshore racing in the 1960s, including the triumphs of its founder, racing legend Don Aronow.

According to Donzi’s vice president of sales, Craig Barrie, “Donzi put itself on the map in the mid-1960s with Don Aronow winning races and setting records in his famous ‘Donzi 007’ raceboat, and later, in an even faster ‘Donzi 008.’ The 2009 model year marks Donzi’s 45th anniversary – the perfect time to celebrate our heritage with these special models.”

Based on Donzi’s venerable 22 Classic and popular 35 ZR, the 009’s were conceived as “true driver’s boats,” as described by Donzi’s vice president of marketing, Josh Stickles, who explained, “Both 009 models have been designed with a no-nonsense approach that’s sure to strike a chord with enthusiasts. These boats are immediately distinctive because of their throwback graphics and bold styling, but what truly sets them apart is their outstanding performance.”

On the 35 ZR 009, Donzi has employed a custom, lightweight “racing cabin” which features an open, airy design incorporating two removable coolers in lieu of a fiberglass galley, a concealed portable marine head instead of an enclosed head compartment, and a large forward storage area in place of a v-berth. Non-essential components have been removed, the boat’s center of gravity has been moved aft, and overall weight has been reduced by over 300 lbs, compared to the standard 35 ZR. “This reduction and reallocation of non-structural weight has resulted in enhanced performance, a more agile feel, and near-perfect balance,” explained Stickles.

Added Barrie, “Wringing 80+ mph speeds out of a big, beamy, true 35-footer that handles the seas the way the 35 ZR does – with stock MerCruiser 496 HO engines – is a real accomplishment. This package is fast, reliable, and surprisingly affordable to operate.”

The 22 Classic – a model Donzi has been producing for nearly 30 years – has also received a significant performance upgrade as part of the 009 treatment. A high performance engine hatch with a molded fiberglass scoop conceals a single 496 HO installed with a raised X-dimension, propelling the latest iteration of Donzi’s venerable icon to speeds in excess of 80 mph. Other unique features of the 22 Classic 009 include a custom carbon fiber dash panel, leather-wrapped steering wheel with 009 insignia, and a center-fill fuel cap – a nod to vintage Donzi Classics.

Both the 35 ZR 009 and 22 Classic 009 feature solid color hullsides (Modena Red, Electric Yellow, Commando Black, or Arctic White), contrasting boot stripe, offset deck stripe that intersects the helm and is carried through the custom cockpit upholstery, prominent “Donzi 009” badging, and vintage American race flags - all authentic, throwback styling cues from Donzi’s 1960’s-era 007 and 008 racers. Both models are being produced in a limited, serialized run and will be delivered with a dash plaque and special owner’s certificate.

In addition to enhanced performance, custom graphics, and special touches throughout, Donzi has upped the exclusivity factor by announcing a limited production run of twelve 35 ZR 009s and eighteen 22 Classic 009s.

In business since 1964, Donzi Marine builds over 25 models of pleasure boats ranging from 16 to 43 feet. These include the ZR line of race-bred high performance boats, the tournament-proven ZF fishing series, and the innovative ZFX line of performance center consoles. The company remains true to its heritage, still building the legendary Classic line including the original 1960s-era 16 Classic.

Donzi is a division of American Marine Holdings, which also operates Pro Line Boats, a market leader in recreational saltwater fishing boats.
