Club Marine Goes Green with Coastcare

by Jeni Bone on 29 Sep 2008 Industry insurer, Club Marine is teaming up with Coastcare, Australia’s largest coastal community volunteer network, to support a range of environmental programs aimed at restoring or protecting endangered species and vulnerable locations around Australia.

The partnership will contribute to the sustainability of Australian marine life and raise awareness of issues pertaining to threatened and endangered marine species.

'Coastcare volunteer groups are actively working to improve the coastal and marine environment right around Australia, but their efforts go unnoticed by most of us who use and enjoy this extraordinary playground,' said Brian Scarsbrick, Coastcare CEO.

'Through the Coastcare/Club Marine initiative, five of those groups will receive funding for their incredible work, usually done with very little resources. Having Club Marine magazine follow the work of the groups over the coming year will also allow the readers entry into a world of remarkable challenges, personalities, triumphs and fascinating creatures,' he added.

Club Marine CEO, Mark Bradley said he was particularly pleased to be able to support Coastcare on behalf of nearly 140,000 policyholders who rely on Club Marine to provide insurance for their boating lifestyles.

'Most skippers take their environmental responsibilities very seriously, but each year we see more and more pressure applied in the ongoing conflict between our continued enjoyment and free use of the marine environment and the conservation and protection of that same environment for the benefit of future generations.'

Club Marine will support the 60,000 selfless volunteers who work tirelessly to protect our magnificent but fragile beaches, harbours and bays.

'Coastcare has thousands of volunteers around Australia who are involved in hundreds of projects. We’re helping them with five specific projects on behalf of Club Marine members,' said Bradley.

'We’re supporting Coastcare financially and we’re also providing insurance cover for the boats that are involved in delivering the projects.

'An example is the Dolphin Research Institute at Westernport in Victoria, where they have PhD students out doing life cycle studies on dolphins and other marine mammals.

'We’re proud to be in a position where we can invest money in projects of this calibre.'
