For Ellison, challenge extends outside water

Larry Ellison’s team had just won another sailing race. His gear was still damp from the salt spray and the Champagne, and he was wearing a gold medal around his neck.
“The gold medalist passenger,” Ellison said mockingly of himself as he sat for an interview.
Ellison and humility are not often associated. A self-made American billionaire who co-founded Oracle Corporation and is one of the world’s wealthiest men, he remains a very conspicuous consumer in a nasty economy: a collector of trophy properties and, after quite a chase on the water and in the New York courts, the America’s Cup trophy, too.
But Ellison, lupine gaze and dandily trimmed beard in place, is more than clear-eyed enough to admit when he is being taken for a ride. Last weekend, during the America’s Cup World Series event in San Diego, he sat as an observer on the back of Oracle 4, one of his team’s AC 45-foot catamarans, while skipper James Spithill and the other four members of the crew owned the podium: winning the match racing title and the fleet race.
Ellison, the team’s owner and an accomplished sailor in his own right, hopes to take a more active role when the real America’s Cup is raced in a 72-foot, or 22-meter, version of these catamarans in 2013 on San Francisco Bay.
“I’d like to be on the boat, but again, what’s important is that we put the best guys out there who have the best chance to win,” Ellison said.

Spithill guest for Harken Youth MR Championships

Fresh back from winning the unique fleet and match racing double at the AC45 World Series in San Diego, James Spithill, current America’s Cup winning skipper and one of RPAYC’s favourite sons, has come back home especially to be the special guest for the 19th annual Harken International Youth Match Racing Championships and Rockin' Robin Trophy, hosted by The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club from Saturday 26 November until Wednesday 30 November 2011.
He will be guest speaker at the opening ceremony on Saturday 26 November to welcome the competitors and talk about his history with the Harken and the doorways it opened for him. He will also be on the water to witness the match racing action first hand and will certainly provide some added inspiration and motivation for the youthful competitors.

British sailing mag Yachts & Yachting has made ORACLE Racing Spithill the cover subject of its December 2011 issue under the tag line, “America’s Cup Action; Capsize thrills as the tour hits Plymouth.” ORACLE Racing Spithill never capsized at the ACWS Plymouth, although it came perilously close during one of the speed trials. There were, however, many other capsizes, some of which are pictured in the feature.

America’s Cup San Diego

At 160 years old, the America’s Cup is the oldest trophy in international sport. The America’s Cup has evolved into one of the world's leading sporting competitions – featuring the best sailors on the world’s fastest boats, the wing-sailed AC45 and AC72 catamarans. The new America's Cup World Series opened its inaugural season in August 2011 and continues with events around the world stopping in San Diego.
Check out my photos when I was in a chase boat and a video with Skipper Chris Draper from Team Korea showing how the AC45's get into the water.
This was one of the most amazing sporting events I've attended.

America’s Cup fate rests with green report

With less than two years to go before tens of thousands of visitors flood The City’s waterfront for a glimpse at the America’s Cup yacht race, organizers have a lot to get done in just a short time. The next month will be pivotal.
The event’s final environmental impact report will be published on Thursday and go to the Planning Commission on Dec. 15.
Dozens of permit applications and special requests needed for the event and its related development projects can’t move forward until the Planning Commission certifies that environmental review. The Board of Supervisors and related city agencies also must weigh in, Sullivan said.
“Nothing can happen without a certified EIR,” Sullivan said. “That is it for right now. The EIR has to be certified for this to continue.”

July 11, 2011: Draft EIR for America’s Cup released
Dec. 1, 2011: Final EIR expected to be released

America’s Cup planners follow the crowd

San Francisco officials got their first look at America’s Cup racing during a San Diego trip last week that will help them refine plans to host even bigger events in 2012 and 2013.
A contingent of about 25 city officials saw several yacht races on San Diego Bay, which serve as a tune-up competition for the nine teams battling for the America’s Cup in 2013. The San Francisco group also toured hospitality suites, got behind-the-scenes looks at production facilities and ambled through the America’s Cup Village, a bayside area with shopping, eating, drinking and musical acts.
Among the San Francisco contingent in San Diego was Supervisor Mark Farrell, port officials Jonathan Stern and Brad Benson, San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency planner Peter Albert and Phil Ginsburg, the general manager of the Recreation and Parks Department.
Lieutenant Gov. Gavin Newsom, who was San Francisco’s mayor when the city won the right to host the 2013 America’s Cup, was in San Diego as were representatives from the Fisherman’s Wharf business association.

Energy Team’s Loick Peyron in record attempt
Energy Team skipper Loïck Peyron missed the ACWS San Diego due to his commitments to the maxi trimaran Banque Populaire V, which was waiting for a weather window to attempt the Trophée Jules Verne, the outright, non-stop around the world record.
Today the crew of 14 is in its sixth day at sea after departing on Tuesday, Nov. 22, and last night crossed the equator in the middle of night, at 00h 26mn 52s. Banque Populaire V has an advance of 79.3 miles on the reference time. It cruises at an average speed of 24.8 knots over 4 hours and 22 knots over 24 hours.
The boat is currently continuing its descent to the south off the Brazilian coast at a speed of about 25 knots. These conditions will persist for hours and days to come, with it seems a gradual rotation of the wind in the east.
