Australian Schools Team Racing Championship Day 1

by Luke Tupper on 12 Jul 2012
St Joesphs School and Anglican Church Grammar School preparing to race. - Day 1 2012 Australian Schools Team Racing Championship Luke Tupper
The 2012 Australian Schools Team Racing Championship is being held at the Albert Sailing Club on Albert Park Lake from the 12th to the 15th of July. This is the biggest Australian Schools Championship so far in the history of the event, with 22 teams competing from every State and the ACT. The regatta kicked off this morning with a guest appearance by Jessica Watson (OAM), who sailed with some of the competitors before officially opening the event.

The racing was in a light shifting northerly breeze, which shifted around to the east during the day. 42 races were completed in gradually lightening conditions. At this stage the South Australian teams are at the top of the leader table, possibly a sign of their intention to return the trophy to South Australia. The four teams topping the leader board with three wins in the first three rounds are; St Josephs School (SA), St Michaels College (SA), Esperance Senior High School (WA), and Christ Church Grammar School (WA).

It is expected that more than 15 rounds will be completed in varying weather conditions over the next three days so any team could still be crowned the Australian Schools Team Racing Champion.
