Nepean One Design Regatta hosts the 2012 Shark Canadian Championship

With the support of over ninety volunteers and our returning Premier sponsor IP Strategies, the Nepean Sailing Club hosted a very successful Nepean One Design (NOD) regatta on June 23rd – 24th, the largest attended NOD regatta in recent club history.
The formula was straight-forward: start with a solid foundation of enthusiastic volunteers and partner Sponsorship support, add in a Shark Canadian Championship, throw in a bit of good regatta weather and well run races by a top notch Race Committee, mix in some fantastic post-race entertainment, and presto... you have a premier regatta! This year we also introduced a new web site (nod.nsc.ca) with an enhanced online registration system, more participant information, and constant news updates as we progressed towards the big event.
This year the NOD was both honored and excited to host the 2012 Shark Canadian Championships, C&C 27 Ontario Championships, and served as a counter regatta for the J/24 Quebec Championship and Ontario Series in addition to the usual popular one-design class racing. One hundred and fifteen boats and three hundred and fifty competitors participated in ten class fleets, coming from as far as Monmouth Boat Club in New Jersey, racing on three courses on Lac Deschenes (Ottawa River). New fleets this year included Sharks and Martin 16s, with a strong return showing from fleets such as the Albacores and 505s. A huge thank you to Michael Lee and the team of NSC yard and harbor volunteers who assisted over forty visiting club boats with launch, haul-out, storage, camping, and harbor mooring! And a huge thank you to Warner Monteiro (web support), Michelle Torrie, and the team of registration volunteers who shepherded everyone in the face of a surge of late arrivals.
New Platinum sponsors Composition Composites Inc. (CCI) and Volvo Ottawa were on-hand for the weekend out on the water Saturday checking out the racing action, and displaying their wares on the grounds. Both Volvo Ottawa and CCI sponsored the complimentary Saturday and Sunday breakfasts respectively, and offered significant product incentives to registered teams. Kudo’s to Tamara Terzic & team who did such a fantastic job attracting and caring for our Sponsors.
David Searle and his Race Committee (RC) team did a fantastic job organizing and running three race courses, incorporating the added requirements of hosting a Shark Canadian Championship fleet, and maximizing the amount of racing in highly variable wind conditions. The RCO’s included Greg Dargavel, Rick Anderton, and Ross Cameron.
Although Saturday started light and variable, the winds soon strengthened to between ten to fifteen knots from the North-West in beautiful Ottawa sunshine and most fleets were able to put four to five races into the books. Arriving back in harbor, sailors were greeted by the Caribbean sounds of The Nepean Panharmonics steel band, and treated to Bajan appetizers served up by Take Home Barbados Chef. There was much discussion recounting the day’s racing over a gourmet chicken dinner put together by NSC’s own Galley crew. Only two protests were filed at the NOD on Saturday paving the way for quick scoring results. We’d like to thank Chief Judge Michael Nicoll-Griffith, and the protest committee for contributing their professional experience.
A draw was held after dinner with prizes provided by sponsors Advantage Boating, Atlantis Spa, the Chandlery, UK Halsey, and Robertson & Robertson Insurance. All evening racing photos and video were displayed thanks to Blitzen Photography and videographer Scott Parker. Then the party started as the Acoostic Shooters rocked the club deck until after midnight... was that Eric Ramsden singing Lady Gaga? Yet another solid NOD event when it came to the food and entertainment thanks to Jay Morden and NSC club operations!
Sunday saw poor racing conditions with little wind in the morning, and when both RC and competitors gamely headed out, a squall rolled in making any racing unfathomable before the 2 PM cut off. Capping Sunday's Awards ceremony with special guest Richard Kluska from IP Strategies, traveler awards were also presented to the farthest visiting boats in recognition of their important contribution to the Regatta’s success. Congratulations to all the 2012 NOD Fleet winners, and Crazy Ivan winner of the 2012 Shark Canadian Championships!

About the Nepean One Design regatta (NOD): Hosted by Nepean Sailing Club, the annual Nepean One Design regatta is a fun filled, action-packed, competitive sailing regatta which traditionally takes place the last weekend in June. The premier sailboat racing event in the National Capital Region, this regatta is open to the most popular dinghy and keelboat one-design classes including; 505's, Fireballs, Albacores, 420s, Laser 28, Laser Radial, C&C 27, Kirby 25, J/24, Martin 16s, Shark, Tanzer 22 and Soling’s. With live entertainment and great food off the water to compliment great racing, the regatta is a spring highlight event for amateur racers. Most boats come from clubs in the Ottawa/Gatineau region, but many travel from all over Ontario, Quebec, and the northeast U.S.
