Australian Optimist sailors in Boca Chica for World Championships

The Optimist sailing World Championships begin on July 15th in Boca Chica, the Dominican Republic. This is considered the most important and prestigious event in international junior sailing.

Five of Australia's most talented junior sailors have finally arrived after two days travelling to prepare themselves and their boats for a weeks training before the official event begins.

The team comes from four states, Jack Graves Victoria ( SSBC ), Alistair Young Western Australia ( FSC ), Jim Colley New South Wales ( RPAYC ), Kyle O'Connell Queensland ( SYC ) and Kye Evans Queensland ( RQYS ). The team is coached by experienced World Optimist coach Rob Brewer and managed by Camilla Graves.

These junior sailors ( 12 - 14 years ) have spent hours improving their sailing technique, racing strategy and fitness. I was privileged to see them in action during the New Zealand nationals in April this year. They were professional in their approach and preparation and displayed excellent sportsmanship. They are impressive young men, great roll models to younger sailors and fantastic ambassadors for Australia.

We'll update their progress as the regatta unfolds, in the mean time I'm sure they'll be enjoying some warm weather and water!
