July Cup at Crouch YC - Race 1

by Crouch Yacht Club on 9 Jul 2012
SW
The July Cup first race got underway at Crouch Yacht Club on Sunday 8th July 2012. Fortunately for the competitors who came to the start line, the rain had stopped, following huge downpours earlier in the morning.

Starting in light winds at low water, with the wind direction flicking between North Easterly and west of North, Double Trouble helmed by Duncan Haley got the best start as the fleet headed towards Cliff. Encore owned by Paul Trueman just behind and to leeward. Just Is was behind, but up to weather, and set her asymmetric, with Mantra further to weather still, but with less boat speed. However, once Mantra powered up a bit more, Just Is struggled to get away from her, and with her asymmetric up was unable to close on the front two boats.

The wind then went more forward and from Creeksea to Cliff, the fleet got a beat, and the faster boats pulled clear on this leg. At Cliff the wind freed off, giving a bear off, so boats set asymmetrics to Canewdon.

The order on the water stayed the same until Just Is encountered problems at Number 7, allowing Encore to get through them, although Encore did not get far enough ahead of Just Is to save her time.

The last spinnaker leg from Number 13 to Number 5 saw Mantra get an enormous twist, and they had to drop, which led to them losing their time on Just Is.

The results on corrected time were Double Trouble first, Just Is owned by Frank Curtis second, Mantra owned by Phillip and Sally Harbott third and Encore fourth.
